Research Begins to Improve Healthy Food Access in Liverpool

Covid-19 has highlighted quite how serious the issue of food insecurity is in some sectors of our community. Indeed, the UK is one of the worst performing nations with regards to food insecurity, with an estimated 2.2 million people struggling to access ample food over the past year.

With this in mind the researchers from the University of Liverpool’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Food Systems (CESFS for short!) have teamed up with Liverpool City Council, Liverpool’s food alliance Feeding Liverpool and local fresh food caterer Can Cook to address the problem of food insecurity and access to healthy food in Liverpool.

Part of the research has included the creation of the Liverpool Food Mapping Dashboard. It is hoped that this publicly accessed, interactive dashboard will enable all stakeholders in food retail and provision to monitor where there is a need for better access to healthy food and put interventions in place where there is an identified need.

You can view the food mapping dashboard here; https://foodmapping.pythonanywhere.com/

The project team are keen to receive feedback on the dashboard from local businesses and charities, and anyone else who is interested in food provision. You can contact the team either by email foodmappingliverpool@gmail.com or via the dashboard website (link above).
