Lady Lever Reopening With a New Exhibition This May

Lady Lever Art Gallery - Augustus John

As soon as they get the green light to reopen, the gorgeous Lady Lever art Gallery will be welcoming members of the public through its doors to enjoy its latest exhibition, which features the work of celebrated artist Augustus John. The Last Bohemian: Augustus John will run until 30th August 2021 and include 40 of his works, including the infamous ‘beheaded’ portrait of Lord Leverhulme, which was hugely controversial at the time it was first exhibited.

John was not only Britain’s leading celebrity portrait painter; he was the archetypal ‘bohemian’ artist. He was fascinated by the gypsy way of life and lived a somewhat ‘travellers’ lifestyle. Many famous figures sat for his portraits, including the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and celebrated English poet William Butler Yeats. These portraits will feature in the exhibition.

Works have been loaned from several different galleries and a private collection.

The earliest the exhibition can open will be 17th May. While the exhibition is free, the organisers will be asking visitors to the exhibition to pay what they feel is appropriate to help support art galleries and museums in Liverpool.
