A New Community-Run Supermarket Opens in Birkenhead

Community Supermarket Birkenhead

The Noctorum Estate on the Wirral now has its very own community supermarket and tea-room, thanks to the hard work and vision of members of the local community! St Peter’s Primary School, St Peter’s Catholic Church and the Charity ‘Break the Mould’ have been hard at work over lockdown, finalising plans for the shop and organising community volunteers.

The Noctorum Estate has no community hub or amenities, and the only shops are small, expensive convenience stores. Therefore, the Social Supermarket is a very welcome addition to the community as it will serve both as a place for people to meet for a chat and do their shopping.

The Social Supermarket is situated in the lovely, refurbished vestibule of St Peter’s Parish Church and officially opened for business on Saturday, 24th April. Like other community shops, the produce is provided by supermarkets, in this case, Tesco and Hurst Bakery. The shop is not benefit or means-tested and is open to anyone.

None of this would be possible without the hard work and support of members of the local community, including the church and primary school. Claire Smith, business manager at St Peter’s Primary School, clearly agrees;

“There has been an influx of willing local volunteers, school staff and parishioners to both prepare the venue and ensure the supermarket can be opened as often as possible.”

Good luck to The Social Supermarket, and long may it continue!
